Myofunctional Therapy

How It Works

What to expect, start to finish

Therapy follows a clear sequence. Here is what each stage involves, what we ask of you, and how we know when you are finished.

The four stages

01

Consultation

Short conversation · No commitment

We talk through what you or your provider have noticed, your health history, and what you are hoping to change. This is where we decide together whether a full evaluation is worth your time.

If myofunctional therapy is not the right fit, we say so here and point you toward who can help.

02

Evaluation

One longer visit · In person · Written findings

A structured assessment of resting posture, breathing pattern, tongue mobility, swallowing, and the muscles of the face and jaw. We take photos and measurements so progress can be compared later against where you started.

You leave with an explanation of what we found and a proposed plan, including how many visits we expect. Your referring provider receives the same findings in writing.

03

Therapy visits

Typically 10 to 14 visits, more when needed · In person or over Zoom

Each visit introduces a small number of new techniques, reviews what you practiced since last time, and adjusts the plan based on how you are progressing. Visits are spaced to give the new pattern time to settle before adding to it.

Early visits focus on awareness and correct resting posture. Later visits work toward making the pattern automatic during eating, speaking, and sleep.

Most of these visits can be completed over Zoom. We will let you know which ones need to be in person, since a few require hands-on assessment.

04

Completion and follow-up

Re-assessment · Periodic check-ins

We repeat the original assessment and compare it to your starting point. When the new pattern holds without conscious effort, active therapy ends.

We schedule check-ins afterward to confirm it is still holding, and send a closing summary to your referring provider.

Your part

We will be straightforward with you: this is the part that determines whether therapy works.

Twice Daily practice

Short sessions, morning and evening. Consistency matters far more than duration.

A few min. Each session

Most people fit it into an existing routine, like brushing their teeth.

Every day Between visits

Muscle patterns change through repetition. Skipped weeks slow the whole program.

Most visits In person or over Zoom

Your evaluation and a few hands-on check-ins are in person. The rest can be done by video.

For children. A parent or caregiver attends visits and helps with daily practice at home. Children do best when practice is folded into an existing routine and treated as something you do together rather than a chore assigned to them.

Preparing for your first visit

What to bring

Helpful, though not required to get started.

Your referral if you have one, a list of current medications, and any recent sleep study, orthodontic records, or ENT notes. If a release has been performed or is planned, bring those details.

What to expect in the room

Nothing invasive, nothing uncomfortable.

We look, measure, and ask you to perform simple movements. There are no needles, no appliances, and no procedures. Photos are for your record and are only shared with providers you approve.

Questions worth asking

We would rather you ask than wonder.

How many visits do you expect for me? What will daily practice look like? How will we know it is working? What happens if progress stalls? All fair, and all things we should be able to answer clearly.

If therapy is not the answer

We will tell you.

Some findings need an ENT, a sleep physician, a dentist, or a surgeon first. If that is the case, we say so and help you get to the right provider rather than starting a program that will not work.
