Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
An individualized treatment program that corrects how the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face function, supporting healthy breathing, swallowing, and jaw comfort.
What is myofunctional therapy?
Your tongue, lips, and facial muscles follow patterns you repeat thousands of times a day, mostly without thinking about it. When those patterns develop incorrectly, they can affect how you breathe, swallow, chew, and rest your jaw.
Therapy retrains those patterns. Working with your therapist, you learn to hold the tongue in its correct resting position, establish nasal breathing, and correct the way you swallow. Over time the new pattern becomes automatic, the way the old one was.
There is no device, appliance, or surgery involved, and the therapy itself has no known risks. What it does require is consistency, so care is structured around building the habit gradually rather than correcting it all at once.
Concerns we address
If you were referred to us, your provider likely noticed one of the following.
Breathing & Sleep
- Chronic mouth breathing
- Nasal obstruction and congestion
- Snoring
- Sleep-disordered breathing
- Daytime fatigue and poor sleep quality
Oral Habits & Function
- Low resting tongue posture
- Tongue thrust and improper swallowing
- Thumb and finger sucking
- Prolonged pacifier use
- Restricted tongue mobility (tongue-tie)
Jaw & Facial Comfort
- TMJ and TMD dysfunction
- Clenching and grinding
- Face, jaw, and neck tension
- Limited or uncomfortable opening
Growth & Alignment
- Orthodontic relapse after treatment
- Dental crowding
- High or narrow palate
- Speech clarity and oral coordination
Before & After Procedures
- Preparation before a tongue-tie release
- Recovery following frenectomy
- Support before and after jaw surgery
- Maintaining orthodontic results
Who is it for? Children around age four through adults. Because therapy depends on active participation, a child needs to be old enough to follow along, or have a caregiver working with them at home.
How care works
Consultation
A short conversation about your concerns to see whether an evaluation makes sense.
Evaluation
A full assessment of breathing, swallowing, and muscle function. We review the findings with you.
Therapy Program
Techniques taught over regular visits, with a few minutes of home practice each day.
Completion
We reinforce the new patterns until they hold on their own, then check in periodically.
We work with your care team. We coordinate with dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, sleep medicine physicians, and speech-language pathologists, and we share our findings with the provider who referred you.
What to expect
Spaced one to a few weeks apart. Your evaluation sets the actual plan, which may be shorter or longer.
Old enough to follow along, or with a caregiver working alongside them at home.
Short daily practice between visits is what drives the change.
Your evaluation and a few hands-on check-ins are in person. The rest can be done by video from home.
What therapy can and cannot do. Research suggests myofunctional therapy may reduce the severity of sleep-disordered breathing, ease snoring, and support orthodontic results. It is not a replacement for medical treatment of sleep apnea or for care from your dentist or physician, and we will tell you plainly if we think another provider should be involved.
